About Me & Contact Info

Sue Mertl

Hello, my name is Sue (nickname Susie)

Welcome to The Chelsea Project

Contact me:   thechelseaproject@icloud.com

I am an avid DIYer who is building, painting, sewing, decorating, and gardening my way through life.

“Life Is a Project” actually began with husband (Jim) in 1976.  Since then, we’ve moved eight times and lived in five different states.  Emotionally, the moves were pretty easy because “project home” was always with us, not in the houses we left behind.

Twenty years ago, we finally planted roots in Atlanta, Georgia, in a newly constructed 1995 traditional home.  Now, it is time to refresh, renew, and renovate.  We are doing most of the work ourselves, although I’m not sure how.  I’m barely five feet tall, Jim is not a DIYer, and most of our tools are secondhand.  But, to our credit, we have managed to learn our way around the DIY world…..and we both still have all our fingers and toes.

I am the one with all of the wild ideas.  I also plan, write, photograph, and actually complete most of the DIY projects.  Hubs contributes mainly carpentry, on some projects, but contributes on all projects and in the greatest of portions…….patience, grace, and understanding.

Here’s a peek at my current studio….tarps and ladders from the base of the stairs..and all the way to the front door.  Now you know why I need all of that grace.

Well….what can I say?  This is where the magic happens.  Lol.

I’m a nut for trying to turn just about anything into a canvas.  Some things have worked…. like my favorite project… a painting on drapery liner (see here) and some haven’t (epic fail…..oh…my bad……wink.wink.. sorry the link doesn’t work).

 I don’t know why I do this….I’m not a trained artist.

 Note to self….stay fearless.

Anyway……together, Hubs and I hope to encourage and inspire others to tackle projects that would give a home its unique signature and style.  For us, redos are best when kept simple…and fun.

We’d love to have you join us as we convert our 1995 traditional home into a 2015 casual and comfortable classic…

Here’s a few of our favorite projects:

Always Begin with the First Step (Staircase Redo)… here

The Little Nook That Could (Kitchen Redo)…  here

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bath Redo… here

Sometimes…You Just Gotta Keep On Keepin On (Furniture Redo)…… here

I said… what?   …..Answers to FAQs

Blog name?  The blog got its name because we live on a street named Chelsea…..and since creating a happy, healthy home is a life long project…… The Chelsea Project seemed like a natural.

Nickname?  I have very dark brown eyes and so….my dad called me Black-eyed Susan…..after the flower.  Then…the nickname….Susie….just kind of stuck.

Vices?  I have a sad addiction to the internet (I’m never unplugged), Southern-style sweet tea, and good, good, good coffee.

One of my mottos:  Don’t throw anything away.  Just about anything can be repurposed into something wonderful.

True Confessions:  I like lace and china as much as power tools and paint brushes. IMG_1385

And…I like big bloomers and I cannot lie…. here

And…Inside my head….I can sing like Julie Andrews.

One of my favorite quotes:  “Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”  Albert Einstein

You should know this about me: IMG_1518 You might be surprised:

My GrrrrrGranddad was an officer in the United States Revolutionary War.

I know how to set tobacco, can garden vegetables, cure country ham, and make homemade sausage.

    • Jen,
Oh my stars! Thank you so very, very much! I’m speechless..,and as you can see from my long-winded blogs….this doesn’t happen very often. I spent the first three weeks working hard on content and photographs. You have helped me appreciate that the time was well spent.
